The Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review updates and supersedes previous flood studies. It provides the most up to date technical information on how flooding behaves across the catchment – including how deep floodwaters may be, how fast they may move, and how far they may spread during different flood events.

Once finalised and adopted, Council will use this information to support land use planning, assist emergency response management and improve community awareness of flood risk.

The Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review uses updated data and improved computer modelling along with local knowledge gathered through a large community survey. Residents shared photographs and observations from several intense storm events that occurred between 2020 and 2022. This information helped validate and improve the modelling, resulting in a more accurate understanding of flood behaviour.

The updated modelling reflects current conditions in the catchment, including changes in development, land use and topography. This means some areas are now identified as being differently affected by flooding than was previously understood, and some properties are identified as flood prone for the first time. The map on this project webpage shows flood extent, depth and velocity for the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) flood event. A 1% AEP flood has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year and is commonly used to guide land use planning and development controls in NSW.

The Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review models two types of flood events.

The Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) map shows floods that are more likely to occur and are commonly used for planning and development controls (such as setting minimum floor levels). For example, a 1% AEP flood has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. For day to day property and development decisions, the AEP map is the key reference. The AEP map is available on this project webpage and shows flood extent, depth and velocity for the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) flood event.

The Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) map shows a highly unlikely, maximum potential flood extent based on the most severe rainfall and catchment conditions. It is mainly used for emergency planning. The PMF maps can be found in the Report Figures section of the Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review.

This will include preparing new planning controls, updating the Thurgoona Wirlinga Drainage Strategy and reviewing the Albury Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan where potential measures to reduce flood risk will be assessed.
