Overview
AlburyCity has drafted a new Liquid Trade Waste Policy to guide how businesses, industries and other organisations discharge liquid trade waste into our sewerage system.
Liquid trade waste is wastewater from non-domestic sources such as restaurants, hospitals, workshops, factories, hairdressers, service stations and schools. Unlike household sewage, it may contain chemicals, oils, grease, metals or other substances that can harm our pipes, treatment systems, waterways and the wider environment if not managed properly.
This policy ensures liquid trade waste is managed safely, fairly, and in line with NSW legislation.
Why this matters
Managing liquid trade waste well is vital to:
- Protect public health – by reducing risks of contamination or illness
- Protect the environment – by preventing pollution of rivers, soils and ecosystems
- Maintain our sewerage network – by avoiding blockages, corrosion and costly repairs
- Support sustainable practices – encouraging businesses to reduce waste, pre-treat high-strength waste and explore reuse opportunities
The draft policy also introduces a risk-based approach to approvals and charges, so that businesses are assessed fairly based on the type and volume of waste they discharge.
