What’s this about?

The Code of Meeting Practice sets out how AlburyCity Council meetings are conducted – ensuring they are transparent, fair, and efficient, and that community members have opportunities to participate.

The Office of Local Government (OLG) released a new Model Code of Meeting Practice in August 2025, and all councils are required to adopt an updated version by 31 December 2025. If not adopted, mandatory provisions of the Model Code will automatically apply from 1 January 2026.

The draft AlburyCity Code incorporates the required updates and local adjustments to better reflect how our Council operates.

Key proposed changes

The updated Code aims to:

  • Enhance transparency – by mandating livestreaming of Council and public forums and prohibiting pre-meeting briefings
  • Promote respectful conduct – by limiting attendance via audio-visual link to specific medical or caring reasons
  • Clarify roles – by refining the responsibilities of the CEO
  • Streamline meetings – simplifying the rules of debate and improving clarity for participants and the public

Councillors have also proposed a revised meeting structure, introducing:

  • A dedicated Public Forum and Council Committee meeting (first Monday of each month)
  • A Community Forum (second Monday, if required)
  • A Council Meeting (third Monday of each month)

Why this matters

Council meetings are where key decisions are made about Albury’s future. The Code ensures these meetings are conducted openly, fairly, and in line with community expectations.
